If you don’t want to lose it, do not leave it in the car! DO lock your car.
DO leave your carport lights on, or at least have motion-sensor lights for your driveway and parking areas.
DO record serial numbers of bicycles and any equipment that remains outdoors. Also record serial numbers of electronic equipment, TVs, computers and such which are easily removed in a residence break in.
DO NOT leave billfolds, purses, smartphones and other personal electronics lying around inside your house but readily visible through windows.
DO use your alarm system and know how to use it in an emergency situation, including fire, medical or police emergencies.
DO consider adding cameras to your alarm system. If you already have cameras, please notify the EBR Sheriff’s Office and make those images available when requested.
SECPID’S SECURITY CAMERAS
SECPID continues its program of expanding camera coverage and upgrading our few remaining older cameras. With 17 entrances, and others to be added by new construction abutting Shenandoah Estates, this is a substantial investment to improve the security of our residents. HOWEVER, SECPID is limited each year by budget constraints, especially the increasing number of properties electing the “Senior Exemption”. For 2019 alone this reduced SECPID’s available funding by $26,000, equivalent to 4 additional new camera sites.
SECPID’s annual $75 fee amounts to only $6.25 a month. Please consider the value a voluntary contribution to SECPID – as detailed below – would provide.
AUTOMOBILE BURGLARIES
The Area 9 Crime Report in the May 9 “Southeast Advocate” reported at least sixteen residences in Shenandoah Estates and five more in adjoining areas were recently hit in a one-night “raid” of automobile burglaries. Looking at the street names, it is reasonable to suspect these multiple thefts followed a pre-planned – and likely pre-scouted – route. Reported incidents occurred on main traffic routes throughout Shenandoah Estates including Chadsford, Antioch, Stonewall, Gen. Forrest and Appomattox, and the other incidents were on streets intersecting those.
The EBR Sheriff’s Office is working diligently – including reviewing SECPID’s cameras for evidence – to solve these crimes.
RECCOMENDATIONS
Sadly, the times when houses could be left unlocked and cars parked with the keys in the ignition are in the far past. Today, security requires prevention and diligence. The following recommendations offered by law enforcement officers at meetings of SECPID and the Homeowners Association are worth repeating.
DO NOT leave valuables in your car. This includes purses and billfolds, laptops, electronic pads, pods and smart phones, cash and credit cards, pharmaceuticals, firearms of any type, or anything else easily removed and easily convertible to cash.
Whether you are already paying the annual fee or not, please consider additional support for SECPID’s activities, which support and promote the value of Shenandoah Estates to its residents. Voluntary contributions may be mailed or given to any Commissioner. Checks can be made out to SECPID, and our mailing address is:
