WORKSHEET
Cosmos talks about how the easy life of humans makes it possible to maintain the Stinky Thinking demonstrated by Howard. Making excuses like, “I’ll do it next time,” is just a way of avoiding changing your thinking and behaviors. He gives an example of how a rabbit can’t avoid digging his burrow “But it’s not my turn,” because of what would happen if a fox found him.
Animal world examples are designed to help children see how silly most of their excuses for not doing Their Jobs would be if we lived in the real world of animals. Typical excuses of “I’m too tired” or “I’ll get to it later” may be the result of Stinky Thinking like, “They are trying to take advantage of me and I am not going to let them.”
By placing the blame for your behavior (an unwillingness to do what you need to do in a timely fashion) on the unfairness of others, you are able to justify your Thumbs Down behavior. In additions, you can insulate yourself from the criticism of others, “You are just on their side” thereby avoiding any personal responsibility or the need to change the behavior.
