Howard got into a lot of trouble that spring because of his behavior. You see, Squirrels, unlike a lot of other animals, are very social. That is, they do a lot of things together. I’m sure you have seen squirrels playing together or gathering nuts together.
All of that may look like fun but there is also a lot of work to be done. And whenever there was work to be done or something unpleasant, Howard refused to do it. You need to understand that none of the squirrels liked doing these tasks but they all took turns.
Whenever one of these tasks needed to be done, Howard would say, "That's not my job". Even when it was obviously his turn, Howard refused to do his share. As I am sure that you can imagine, this caused a lot of bad feelings toward Howard.
Instead of changing his behavior, Howard would say, "They are trying to take advantage of me and I am not going to let them",
"I just don't feel like doing it and they can't make me." It got so bad that no matter how much they needed him, Howard would refuse to help.
Howard’s refusal to help was very annoying but also dangerous. As you have heard me say, you humans have it pretty easy compared to us animals. Besides having to live out of doors and getting our own food, we have to watch out for predators.
