I noticed that even when others would try to talk to Howard about the others not liking him, he wouldn't listen. He continued to believe that it was the fault of the other squirrels and that he did not need to change any of his behavior.
This went on throughout the summer and into the fall. Now, as most of you know, fall is when the squirrels start to gather nuts for the winter. In the spring and summer, life is pretty easy. In the fall, the squirrels have to start working very hard and in the winter, well I have heard that life is tough. Personally, I prefer the warm south during the winter but since squirrels can't fly, they have to stay here.
Gathering and storing nuts is the squirrels' big job in the fall.
It is very hard work and is made easier if they help each other. Of course, you know who is not going to be very helpful ... Howard. And because he was unwilling to help others, no one was interested in helping him.
In fact, Howard did not like this entire "nut gathering thing". He thought it was too much work and that it was, “Not my job to be running up and down these trees.” Howard thought that he was much too smart to have to do what the others had to do to succeed. He told himself that even though everyone else was going around gathering nuts, he would not have to do it.
He then came up with a plan to prove that he did not have to work hard like the others. When I saw what he was doing, I thought it was an interesting idea.
