But as I watched his plan develop, something occurred to me. Howard was spending more time and energy with his plan to get nuts than he would have spent just gathering them like everyone else.
His plan was to hang a barrel in a tree and let the nuts fall into the barrel. However, because he never helped others, no one was interested in helping him. However, he did work hard at the project. He found an old barrel and with much effort, rolled it to a tree. He spent a lot of time connecting it to a tree branch. Finally, when he finished his project, it looked pretty interesting.
There was a slight problem with Howard’s plan. He had spent a lot of time refusing to gather nuts or help others gather nuts. He had also spent a lot of time with his barrel plan. In fact, he had spent so much time not doing what he needed to do to get nuts, that now there weren’t any nuts to get.
Winter came quickly that year. There was an early snow and everything was white and very pretty. I was getting ready for my trip to warmer lands. I was wondering how Howard would get through the winter. I knew he did not have much food stored.
His barrel idea was not a bad idea but it took too long and he had started too late. I am sure that you have had the same type of thing happen to you. Rather than do something the way others do it, you spend a lot of time and effort doing (or trying not to do) it your way, only to find out that "your way" does not work or is more work than "their way".
