As a rule, squirrels are very careful about eating the food they have stored for the winter. Unlike you, when they run out of food, they are O-U-T. They can’t go down to the store and get more.
That is why I was so surprised to see Howard sitting on a branch just eating away at the few nuts he had stored. I thought to myself, “Does he not realize that if he eats all of his food in the first week, he will have nothing for months? Maybe he thinks that there is a ‘Squirrel Fairy’ who will magically fix his "lack of food problem”.
Well, I hope you know that there is no such thing as a Squirrel Fairy and Howard ran out of food very quickly. Because he was so quick to say, “It’s not my job” when others asked his help, others were now reluctant to help him.
Now don’t get me wrong, squirrels are very generous and are willing to share some of their food. But animal lives are much more difficult than yours and they were willing to only give away a little food. They knew that it would be a long winter and they needed food for their families.
I noticed that Howard started going around the people places looking for food. There was a young person who was willing to feed him from time to time. But most days, this little person would get on the big yellow box with wheels very early and not return until almost dark.
