On November 11, 1943, with a rank of BM2 (T) (LC) – (Boatsman Mate?), Uncle George was received on board the USS Frederick Funston (CVE-114). The last Muster Date on the USS Frederick Funston was September 21, 1945. His ranks during this time were S1c; S2c; Cox (T) (LC); and BM2c.
The USS Frederick Funston (APA-89) was a class attack transport that served with the US Navy during World War II. Before serving as a Navy APA, she had been the US Army USAT Frederick Funston. After WW11, she was returned to the Army and operated as USAT Frederick Funston. Funston was among the 72 ships transferred to the Navy’s Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS). Like all attack transports, The Frederick Funston class was generously armed with antiaircraft weaponry to protect itself and its valuable cargo of troops from air attack in the battle zone.
Muster Rolls show Uncle George, ranked BM2, on the USS Rendova (CVE-114) on December 31, 1945 and March 31, 1946. On July 1, 1946 he re-enlisted on board at San Diego to serve for 2 more years.
On November 11, 1946, while on board USS Rendova, Uncle George was reassigned to the Naval Hospital in San Diego.
USS Rendova (CVE-114) was a 557 ft. Commencement Bay-class escort carried of the US Navy. She was originally assigned the name Mosser Bay and completed as Willamette, she was laid down by Todd- Pacific Shipyards., Inc., Tacoma, WA June 15, 1944; launched December 29, 1944.
