1943 On March 12, 1943, with a rank of AS (Active Seaman) Uncle George was received on the USS Calvert (APA-32). On April 7, 1943, he was listed as a Seaman, 2nd Class.
The USS Calvert (APA-32) (launched May 22, 1942), was a Crescent City-class attack transport that served with the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. In addition to her ten battle stars, Calvert was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation.
(Attack transports were a special type of transport ship, designed to transport troops and their equipment over long distances to hostile shore, and then execute an amphibious invasion at the destination, using an array of smaller integral assault boats).
