I found another news article in the New Albany Ledger dated March 30, 1883:
Based on this information, it is assumed that everyone in the household had smallpox. Samuel, Melvina and all 6 of their children. What we do know now is that Melvina was suffering with Smallpox when she gave birth to a child the day before she buried her husband and her 4 sons shortly thereafter .... I just can’t imagine what this poor woman was going through. Plus – Jeffersonville and New Albany had been devastated by the 1883 flood in the later part of February 1883. Newspaper articles into June 1883 comment on how dirty and unsanitary the area was and how disease was everywhere.
