CHARLOTTE MARDIS – Born May 5, 1916 - Died August 21, 1977 (8th Grade Education) Charlotte was born at 1:30 pm at home in Utica. Marshall was 33 and Jean 27 and Marshall was employed a railroad section man.
Aunt Charlotte was born on the first anniversary of the third marriage of her parents. She was 12 years old when her mother died and 13 when her father died. Daddy always said that Aunt Charlotte (Sis)
was the glue that held the family together and even though she was young, she took over the part of family matriarch and made sure her younger brothers and sister Gin (Aunt Eva was married with a family of her own), never felt abandoned regardless of the fact they were split up and living in different places.
This is proven time and time again based on the old newspaper articles that I have found that show so many family get togethers centered around her house. She was ever present in the lives of her siblings and then their families.
Going through my childhood things, I see that she was the one who gave Daddy and Mother my baby book for my first Christmas, I see that my first trip in an automobile was from Aunt Sis’s house to my new home. I also remember so many wonderful times at her house. She was truly a special special person and she was loved dearly by her family.
In 1920 Aunt Sis was living with her parents, sister Eva and baby brother Ed. When the 1930 census was taken in April, 3 months after the death of Marshall, Aunt Sis was living with Aunt Eva in Ohio. Aunt Sis came back Jeffersonville within a year or so because in May 1931, she went to the orphanage with her younger siblings.
Orphanage Records: “Sent to Aunt in Jeffersonville by Mr. Schlosser”. They refer to Aunt as Mrs. Crowder Notes say that she was removed June 3, 1932 and was in home for 64 days – July 1 quarter.
At the age of 18, on September 22, 1934, Aunt Sis married Clifton Raymond Kraus. He was 22 years old and employed as a clerk in an auto parts store. They both had 8th grade educations.
