WRAPPED & REEF-KNOTTED COIL




               Purpose

               When a coil of rope not required for immediate use is to be stored or transported
               with other paraphernalia, this is the best way I know of ensuring a fair chance

               that it can be retrieved in the same condition as when it was put away.




               Tying
               Coil  in  such  a  way  as  to  leave  two  long  working  ends  that  can  be  brought

               together and tied with a reef knot (figure 1). Wrap each end up and around the
               coil as shown and tie a second reef knot (figure 2).




               Knot lore

               This  method,  called  cavers/mountain  coil,  appeared  in  On  Rope—North
               American  Vertical  Rope  Techniques,  by  Allen  Padgett  and  Bruce  Smith,

               published (1987) by the National Speliological Society.
