FIGURE OF EIGHT NOOSE
Purpose
This creates a basic adjustable loop and may be used as an alternative to the
double overhand noose.
Tying
Make a loop and then wrap and tuck the working end in a figure of eight as
shown (figures 1–3). Pull the knot tight so that it closes up into a more compact
form (figure 4).
Knot lore
Nooses in general were used in previous centuries, to snare game, small birds
and vermin. These days they are for starting lashings and tying packages with
string. Clifford Ashley in his monumental Book of Knots (1944) awards this one
a five-pointed star to signify that, of all the simple nooses, he rated it Best for the
Purpose.
