ROLLING HITCH




               Purpose

               When the direction of pull upon a hitch is other than a right-angle, but still fairly
               steady, use this modification of the clove hitch (pages 86–87).




               Tying

               Begin as if to tie a clove hitch, then make a second diagonal alongside the first
               one, between it and the standing part of the line (figure 1). Tuck the working end

               beneath just the second turn to complete the knot (figure 2). The handedness of
               the knot should be contrived so that the double knot parts lie on the side from

               which the pull will be imposed (figure 3).



               Knot lore

               The old and outmoded name for this knot was Magnus (or Magner’s) hitch.
