Plastic tubing can be obtained from chandlers which, cut into short sleeves,
is fitted over a rope’s end and then heated (for example, by holding it over a
steaming spout) to shrink and form an artificial whipping. Any one of these is
merely a first aid measure although, if the old timers could have used them, I
have no doubt they would have done so. But sooner rather than later the
accepted semi-permanent treatment is then to apply a whipping, which is a neat
and tight binding of spunyarn (for large hawsers) or twine (for smaller stuff),
which are sold in balls and reels respectively. Use natural fiber on vegetable
fiber cordage and synthetic on synthetic.
