Knot lore
US aeronaut hero, Lieutenant Commander Charles Rosendahl skippered the
gigantic dirigible Los Angeles in the 1930s, and, according to marlinespike
seamanship instructor Joe Collins, who served under him, he insisted that this
knot should be used to bend his craft’s bow mooring line to the fixed ground
line. The knot was used by the US Navy for mooring its lighter-than-air ships
until 1962.
