Kyra’s Story: A Life Restored
For Kyra Tracy Watkin, the war wouldn’t end — even years after coming home from Afghanistan. In 2012,
Watkin, a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, lost two soldiers in her unit when a fuel truck they were driving
was accidentally hit by an Afghan driver causing the vehicle to quickly catch fire. The soldiers, trapped in the
burning vehicle, couldn’t be rescued. It was the first of several wartime incidents that Watkin witnessed.
After multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, she returned home a different person. Haunted by the memories
of war, Watkin was overcome by anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. Her friends and family barely
recognized her.
"Through the program you can reclaim your life, manage your anxiety, and
do the things you love."
In 2016, Watkin, living in Indiana, took the step that saved her life. At no cost to her, she enrolled in Emory
Healthcare Veterans Program, an intensive two-week program for Veterans suffering from the emotional
wounds of military service.
At Emory, Watkin worked one-on-one with some of the world’s most renowned PTSD therapists to address
her problems head-on. She also participated in group sessions and attended social activities that began
peeling away the anxieties that repeatedly plagued her.
Today, the confident, happy Kyra Watkin who joined the Army Reserves at the age of 18 has returned.
Recently married and working as a civilian intelligence worker, Watkin credits Emory Healthcare Veterans
Program with helping her reclaim her life.
