Creole-Style Recessed-Panel Armoire
Clapion Group Louisiana 1790-1830
Cherry and cypress
Cove-molded cornice over two recessed-panel doors, an elaborately shaped skirt, and resting on cabriole legs; the interior with shelves and drawers.
68" high, 45.5" wide, 18.5" deep Condition:Good; cornice replaced June Bourg; found in Acadiana
This armoire is one of a handful presumably made by a cabinetmaker of color named Célestin Glapion, based on a signature on an armoire in the colelction of the Louisiana State Museum. The Glapion Group armoires are recessed paneled, with shaped skirts and cabriole leg—and little else in the way of adornment. See Holden et alF, urnishing Louisiana, pp. 154- 156.
Value Support
Two armoires associated with Glapion have sold at auction since 2004, and both are included here. The most recent sale (Comparable 1) was an inlaid example, so the subject armoire's value is placed below that.
