Colonial Armoire with a Creole Influence
Louisiana 1780-1800
Walnut and Cypress
Simple cornice over tri-paneled doors and tri- paneled sides, on stout bracket feet; interior with shelves and two drawers.
77.25" high, 50.875" wide, 22.5" deep
Condition:Good; replaced cornice, two interior shelves replaced, minor pieced repairs
Descended in the Prudhomme family and was found at Cedar Bend, a Prudohmme plantation house near Natchez, Louisiana
This armoire illustrates the beginnings of the process of creolization in Louisiana furniture. The overall French style is restrained, and the bracket feet, while used with some regularity in French Canada,are highly unusual in early Louisiana.
