Forman was born and raised in New Jersey, attended Princeton, andbecame a lawyer. Before 1802, he headed south and west to Natchez, Mississippi where he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the Territorial Legislature of Mississippi. After his second wife died, Forman journeyed north with his youngest duaghter with the intention of taking her to his father-in-law's home in New Jersey. Unfortunately, on the way, in 1812, Forman was murdered while in Lexington, Kentucky.

All three comparable sales are for recent, identified, male portraits, but only Comparables 2 and 3 are identified as being signed.
