Applied Psychology is a vocational qualification that enables learners to study psychology
and be assessed with a mixture of coursework and examinations at the end of both year
1 and year 2.
Students study the basic approaches to psychology and their application to explaining
consumer behaviour, gender and aggression in year 1. This is externally assessed and
makes up 50% of the year 1 qualification.
Students also complete a piece of psychological research of their choice and are guided
through the research and investigation process. This is internally assessed and makes up

the other 50% of the year 1 qualification. For the extended qualification, students study
COURSE OUTLINE — TWO health, criminal, psychopathology and child development psychology in year 2.
YEAR PATHWAY
Applied psychology is different from A level psychology as the A level route covers largely
LEVEL 3 / BTEC / EDEXCEL similar content, but there is no coursework. The applied psychology course’s external
examinations are grounded in how you apply what you have learned to real life
scenarios, making it very applicable to the world of work.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Candidates develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the core areas of
