A story about change in a small Jewish Russian Village, advertised from the rooftops.
faculty offices
Fiddler On the Roof is one of the most famous plays ever
written. It is full of passion, sorrow, joy, and of course tradition. The story takes place in the town of Anatevka which is undergoing great change and oppression. In the19th and early 20th Century Russia, the Pale of Settlement was a stretch of land where Jewish Russians were forced to live in extreme poverty. In the story a man named Tevye (Tom Latta (12)) has three daughters who are of the age to get married. The local matchmaker Yente, tries to set each of the daughters up with men who she thinks will provide for them. One by one each of the daughters finds a man who would ordinarily be referred to as an outlier and falls in love with him despite his conflicts with society.
The play started with a magnificent solo done by Chris Gregory from a roof, which he also used to advertise for the play by playing it from the top of the faculty office building during break the week of the play. The main characters were introduced through a song called “Tradition”, which showed how much the people of Anatevka valued their traditions. The next scene takes place on the Sabbath,

which is a very important day of the week in the small Russian village. As the story continues, each of the daughters finds true love and causes Tevye and his wife Golde to choose between the happiness of their daughters and the wealth that their family could have.
Before the play was able to be preformed, actors, techies, crew members, and orchestra members rehearsed and planned for almost two months. One thing that made this play different than most of the plays done at the Priory was the fact that it has a live orchestra pit.
Despite logistical challenges the Priory theater was able to put on one of the best plays yet. Chris Gregory (12) who has been involved in Priory theater for the last seven years said, “ I have never experienced a group of people more accepting, engaging or creative than the students, faculty, and parents involved in Priory Theater”. He was certainly right, everyone worked together and made this performance absolutely amazing. The musical concluded with everyone leaving Anatevka.
1. Riley Gallivan (12) sings as she is about to leave for America. . 2. The cast, crew, orchestra, and techies involved in the production. 3. Maria Naclerio (10) and Non Kuramoto (12) dance at the wedding.
