The middle school strives some more? to create a classic story
on its own terms.
Oliver Twist is one of the most iconic stories
ever told. It follows the life of a young boy in London, through his misadventures and wrongdoings, as he tries to navigate life and the hand he has been dealt. Tellingly, it is a strong metaphor for the difficulties of transitional periods and coming of age, so it was the perfect production for the middle school to put on last spring.
Over the course of several months, members of the middle school auditioned for, rehearsed, and became various characters in the cast of the classic Oliver Twist. As the performance date neared, actors scrambled to find and create the exact notes of
1
character that they perceived their roles to connote and necessitate. On opening night, they committed with an impressive and overwhelming ferocity.
Mr. Sugden, the director, said that one of the main challenges was ”that [the play] occurs in a very different time period from our own and we were taking on English Accents as well.” Even though the all middle school cast had little time, they were able to put on a fantastic show. When reflecting on the experience, Mr. Sugden said he was “happy to see the cast rise to those challenges and create the great production that they did with such strong characters.”
