a year in translation, by MONICA MALLON
“It's a thunderstorm in a year in between Powerschool,” says
Anisha Reddy of her
sophomore year.
Sophomore year is the year everything gets
intensified. Everything starts to count for college and ultimately the rest of your life. The days of easy homework, restful nights, and talking with your family are over. The daily routine from sophomore year forward can be summed up in four words which students often set as their status on various social networking sites: “SCHOOL, HOMEWORK, STUDY, and SLEEP”
Sophomore year is the first year where grades count for UC schools. Every mistake counts, which is why the stress of many sophomores spikes. Robert Screven reflects, “Something old is that there is too much homework and something new is that there is too much homework.”
Even though there is too much homework, some students enjoy sophomore year more because of its social aspects. One of the sophomore student representatives, Sarah Halabe, said,“We have gotten to know each other more and it has made school more enjoyable.” While one student seemed to enjoy sophomore year more, Robert Screven (10) stated that “The only reason I stayed here for sophomore year was because of cross country.”
While some may argue whether sophomore year is really better than freshman year, we all know that the best year was kindergarten - we didn't know about PowerSchool back then!
