giving up to
by RICHY CHEN
Every year, Priory students spend 40 days giving up bad habits and giving to the needy.
On the first Wednesday of March, many Priory
students could be seen with a little black spot on their foreheads. They had been marked with ash. This marked Ash Wednesday, the very first day of the forty days of Lent.
During this time, adults in the Priory community tend to participate in deep reflection. Throughout many of these sessions, adults contemplate Lenten themes by reflection and discussion with each other.
While the adults are busy talking, Priory students raise money for a project. All students are given a dollar bill the day they get an ash spot on their foreheads. Everyone is told a parable that teaches the value of utilizing one's talents to increase and multiply the money. Many years ago, students held bake sales or played guitar in Benedictine Square.
1. Alexandra Kastanis (10) wears “embarrassingly” bright colors for a Fashion Disaster. 2. Demonstrating Lenten fun, Kalonee Wiggins (10) deposits money into the penny war buckets. 3. Will Galloway (12) prepares to go on the offensive in an intense dodge ball game. 4. Chris Gregory (12) slips one dollar into the Junior jar, decreasing their points by 100.
Now, classes organize group activities to raise money. This year, class groups decided to raise money by conducting a Penny War and making people who swear donate money. This last example also reflects another aspect of Lent: giving up a bad habit. The seniors tried to diminish their swearing by forcing each other to donate money if they swore. Other classes swore not to eat Nutella and “not to not participate.”
In the middle of Lent, Priory had a week of March Madness. Every day, there were different themes for clothing. From Priory nationality and Aloha day, various amusing costumes became the topic of discussion during the week.
Overall, this exciting period of community bonding and involvement encouraged the entire school to be involved.
