Priory volleyball succeeded despite plenty of adversity.
that always could
The beginning of the volleyball season saw its
fair share of challenges. Coming off of losing the majority of the team to graduation, Coach Dustin Moore already faced a seemingly impossible quest in rebuilding the team. After pulling up a few freshmen and recruiting from the student body, the team saw a week or two of peace before Liz Schilling (11) fell in practice, taking herself out for the duration of the season, and Michaela Koval (12), who had stress fractures from years of volleyball, was told that she should stop playing completely in order to retain the ability to walk.
Koval managed to play through the pain, proving herself time and time again as an invaluable member of the team, leader, and unstoppable libero. Through her work on defense and the offensive lineup of Jane Ross (11), Anna Brett (11), Caroline Clark (11), and Nadia Faisal (9) - with Melanie
Biles (12), Daniela Vivanco (9), and Megan Love (9) stepping up to fill in for injured players - and all led by Marine Hall-Poirier (12), a seasoned veteran of varsity volleyball, the team managed to qualify for CCS championships. However, they had not yet escaped disaster; the evening before the first CCS game, setter Riley Gallivan (12) twisted her knee during a drill. Shaking it off, she insisted she was fine, and still set the team to victory in the same manner she had all season.
The season culminated in a game against Bradshaw Christian. Despite illness (half of the starting lineup had the flu) and injury (there were only three uninjured players on the team), the team fought their hardest to a five-game match, losing by the smallest possible margin. Though they faced adversity throughout the season, the girls proved themselves time and time again.
1. JV's Alejandra Sanchez (9) and Avery Simon (10) encourage Yuju Shin (9) to dig the ball in order to get a point! . 2. Michaela Koval (12) and Marine Hall Poirier (12) laugh hysterically as Riley Gallivan (12) jumps on Melanie Biles (12) on Senior Night. 3. Sara Chang (9), also known as the “Changsta,” serves the ball for the Priory JV team. 4. Anna Brett (11) makes a great block as teammates Jane Ross (11) and Riley Gallivan (12) cover her block.
