The Big bang theory
The middle school STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Art,
Mathematics)brings all of the middle
school working together on a building,
employing creation, science, and
engineering all at the same time. It is a
one time event which is not attached to
classes and therefore there is no
pressure of grade. This is the third year
it's been done. First year was mixed
grades,andtheybuiltaballoonpowered
car.Thesecondyear,theyhadtosenda
marbledownarampintheslowesttime
possible.Thisyearthey'resplitbygrades
andseeingwhocanbuildthebestpaper
structures. They all must use the same
materials, in the same amount of time,
and are judged on height, whether their
structure stands on own, whether they use all materials,

and whether their structure is aesthetically pleasing. This projects aims to get a lot of kids who aren't interested in STEAM to do something that's fun and not high pressure, in hopes of getting them interested.
Mrs. Wood finds inspiration for what the project will be by watching lots of Youtube videos and brainstorming with Trudelle all summer.Shesaysthatshehopesthat thekidswillgain“aninterestindoing science/engineering/technologyAND addingartcomponent”(inother words,they'llseethatit'saboutdesign not just engineering). She thinks its good for exposing kids to new things,
getting them excited, and getting them

to think about fields they haven't thought about before.
