Growing a Greener World
an afternoon in the garden

An October day in Mr. Clark's gardening class is busy, with some students cultivating soil for a how-to video about restoration, some planting and watering seeds, and others harvesting ripe vegetables for Priory's kitchen. The students are excited about their success with tomatoes, lettuce, basil, grapes, and watermelon and begin to plant spinach and carrots. When asked what the best thing that having such a large garden brings the Priory, they all agreed, “Sustainability! So we can have our own resources.” Ada Fathers added that their hard work “brings natural foods to the cafeteria for us all to eat.” Even while they work, the Middle School gardeners enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables they have grown.

The garden work has its challenges; the students have experienced birds pecking at the plants that they have been trying to grow but overall the year has been successful and productive. Outside of the garden itself, the students' favorite part of the year was watching the film “Food Inc.” One boy explained, “it was pretty disturbing to see about big food companies, but it was informing.” Clearly, Mr. Clark and his classes have done a lot for the school by providing everyone with fresh produce. Everyone a should take advantage of the amazing opportunity to work in Priory's very own beautiful garden!
