The Apprentice
Following an exuberant speech, David Casente (11) was chosen as the very first Community Service representative. This position in the ASB was newly established this year to compliment other ideas to help integrate community service into Priory. “A couple years ago, we had a committee of teachers that began to look at our Community Service program and how we could strengthen it”, said Mr. Lai. This resulted in a new position on the ASB, service week, sports teams and clubs doing community service, and a decision to change community service hours to opportunities.
A continuing tradition is our Steward of the Month award, with Nicholas Jaeger (11) and Megan Love (10) as our previous winners.
The new service week received a lot of positive feedback from both freshmen and sophomores and will likely be continued long into the future. Jack Smith (9) tells us that “it was really interesting, and it was cool to see the

extent of our help.” Service week for the freshmen includes going to different programs for every day of the week and testing their abilities with planting, assisting elderly and helping young children. For the sophomores, service week was entirely dedicated to one program which they chose for themselves. Jacey Reed (10) thinks that “it was a good opportunity to help people and experience new things. I learned about the lives of the kids in East Palo Alto and how to help solve conflicts.”
Athletes and clubs are also asked to dedicate some of their time off the field, and out of their classrooms to participate in service events.
However, the change that will affect most students would be the community service requirement change. Instead of completing hours of service, it has been changed to three opportunities per student. David Casente (11) hopes that “students will be motivated to do more community service than asked, as students will see service as an opportunity to grow,” instead of seeing it as a chore.”
