Step Into Liquid
by Candy Yin and Miranda Yan
The Priory Swim team embodies opportunity and potential for both the young swimmers in the team and the team itself. The team undergoes intense training under the leadership of Coach Ian Matthews and Captains Brooks Royals (11) and Elizabeth Boyle (12). Despite the toughness of the training and muscle workouts, the swimmers still enjoy their practices and their meets. Colby Cheung (9) said, “I feel like the team is young, and I love the coach. The training is hard, but we have three fabulous coaches.” The students are clearly eager to bring about the potential they can feel inside of themselves and the team.
The swimmers train almost every day after school in a competitive yet collaborative environment. The swimmers motivate themselves when they watch
their teammates doing their best during training. The swimmers also motivate each other by supporting each other, as all Priory students do. Marton Konde (11) said, “The teammates are really good at swimming. I like the coach, and I know him from water polo. I made friends. The training is hard, but I am getting better. The coach likes to push me to get better.” Marton, like many of his teammates, has gotten to know the other swimmers on the team. As a result, he is also more motivated not to let them down. Both the teammates and the coaches are there to support the swimmers as they do their best to take the opportunity and bring out the potential within each of the swimmers and the team as a whole.
