   type: International Competition (EUROPAN 15)

   site: Laterza (ITA)

   year: 2019
team: Beatrice Conforti, Edoardo Marchese, Francesco Petrone, Irene Romano

The project tries to systematize Laterza’s spaces and places through a synthetic and interscalar
operation. The ‘gravina’ that creeps into the city from the north and reaches the historical
center is a great pedestrian path that gathers the fl ows of people, aggregates and unites functions, lets
itself go by life and advises paths and ways of using space. The system of the three squares is almost
entirely pedestrianized: the voids are thus articulated as a single space composed by a multiplicity of
episodes able to reactivate urban situations of exchange, sharing and participation in collective life.
The project is based on the synergetic relationship between individual, environment - urban and natural -
and community, in the deep conviction that this synergy can guide the design approach from the urban scale
to the design of the furnishing details. It’s by the desirable synergy between citizens, visitors, existing and
planned space and communities that those shared values can emerge, reactivate and enhance the local identity.
The project of the three squares wants to prepare a space capable of being traversed by the
life of the community, in the belief that in the contemporary city the ideas of identity and
community can be projects under construction based on the open and continuous recognition of shared values.
We want to focus on the meeting between residents and visitors in sharing activities and
build relationships and a slow tourism vision able to reach the sustainable development of the city.
