ABSTRACT
The impact of rising migrant remittances on various macroeconomic variables has been
the subject of a series of research work because of its pervasive nature. A few empirical
studies in other jurisdictions have found positive linkages between migration remittances
and education or health outcomes. This study, therefore, established the impact of migrant
remittance on Public Expenditure on Health and Education in Nigeria during the thirty-six
year period spanning 1980-2015 using social infrastructures comprising education and
health as proxy for economic development. The study found a positive relationship
between migrant remittances and government expenditure. In view of this, the study
recommends the harnessing of this fledgling source of development finance which trickles
in through informal means. It is hoped that improved framework will be provided to
stimulate more migrant inflows.
