During the Ayutthaya Period, Pattani had been Siam’s southern colony since the reign of King
Boroma Tri Lokanat. In the reign of King Ramathibodi II, the Portuguese took hold of Malacca and
expanded their trading power to the Malay Peninsula making Pattani one of the major trading coastal
hubs. The Portuguese had also encouraged several cities, including Pattani, to free themselves from
N Ayutthaya’s control until Ayutthaya had to invade these areas to stop the riots.
This occurred throughout the Ayutthaya and Thonburi times.
During Rattanakosin, King Rama I expanded his power to the towns in the Malay Peninsula, which
2 km. absolutely surrendered to Siam. During the reign of King Rama II, Pattani served as a southern
