HISTORY OF AIRPLANES
On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright made the world's first flight in a heavier-than-air
aircraft over the sand dunes of Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, United States.
He manned a motorized biplane, the "Flyer"; he flew for 12 seconds over 37 meters and
at a height of 40 meters and managed to land safely. The engine had 12 horsepower.
This first flight is the most important event in the history of aviation.
On the historic December 1903, brothers Wilbur and Orville met on the beach at Kitty
Hawk. They flipped a coin to see who would fly first. Wilbur won but he crashed to the
ground. It was repaired and with the new modifications his brother Orville, followed in turn
and made the first flight in the world. It was the first time in the history of the world that a
machine carried a man in the air in full flight.
In the fourth and final flight of the day, the turn went to Wilbur, who at the controls, made
the flight that lasted 59 seconds and the route was 250 meters, but it was decisive for
what would come next:
The Wrights had created the airplane, one of the most momentous inventions of the
century.
