Social Function
Personal letters are letters that are written to people we know such as friends,
parents, siblings, and cousins. Letters are not only written to inform but to
strengthen the bond between two people writing to each other.
The Structure
Personal letters consist of four basic parts : the heading, the opening, the
body, and the closing.
The heading includes the date of the letter and the sender’s address
The opening of the letter consists of the salutation and the recipient
The body contains the information to the recipient
The closing contains the complimentary closing and the writer’s
signature.
Opening Salutations
There are some ways to give salutations :
Dear (commonly used)
Good day or Hi/Hello (neutral and less formal)
The salutation is followed by recipient name (either last names or full names).
You may include someone’s title (Mr, Mrs, Ms, and Dr)
Example : Dear Mr. Amir, Hi, Jony, Dear Dad.
Complimentary closing.
There are some ways to write complimentary closing.
Regards, (neutral – there is no close relation)
Sincerely yours, Cordially ( shorten the distance between the sender
and the recipient)
With love, (close relation)
Note : There is no rule what you have to write in the body of the letter.
