                                                  The Benefits of Music

Music has been around since the early ages of human civilisation. In today’s world,
music is not only for our entertainment, but is widely used for other beneficial purposes.
Generally, music can help us by improving our memory, help in our ability to learn better and
allow us to express our identity.

The first benefit of music is that it help us improve our memory. Did you know that
musicians have better memory than people who don’t know how to play an instrument? This
is because their training gives them a high working-memory brain. When you listen to music
you are stimulating the hippocampus, which is where the memory is located. When you listen
to music you are creating a new memory with music. Because of this, music therapy is
established to help patients with dementia. This shows how music is able to stimulate our brain
which helps in creating and recovering memory.

Secondly, music helps to us to learn better. If we have good musical intelligence, we
can easily learn a lesson by turning it into a song. For instance, if we play a musical instrument,
our brains will be trained to choose what’s more important in a complicated process, like
reading and communicating. We can also learn how to speak a new language easily while we
listen to music. Listening and singing along to music of the language that you want to learn
helps you learn how to pronounce the words correctly; it expands your vocabulary, and it
teaches you some typical phrases from that culture. Therefore, the more we create and listen to
music, we can obtain many skills and intelligence which aid us in learning.

Lastly, music helps us to express our self-identity. When we listen to music, we can
listen and identify with the singer’s emotions, thoughts or life experiences, making us feel less
lonely. If we share the same love for a certain genre of music with others, we can feel like we
belong to that particular group. This allows us to be social with others, ultimately help us
discover more about ourselves and we fit in to this society. For example, if you enjoy pop
music, then you are welcomed to join a clique that also loves pop. From there, you form
friendships and develop various socializing skills. You will also be able to learn and form your
own unique personality and views. Therefore, music does make an impact on the progressive
growth and identity of a person.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that music brings many benefits for us. These benefits
are especially evident in terms of our memory, learning and identity expression. Luckily, music
will continue to be an integral part of our lives for a many years to come.
