MILLFIELD HOUSE
WELCOME TO
MILLFIELD HOUSE
Millfield House holds a special place in the history of
Millfield, as it is where the school began. “Boss” Meyer
founded Millfield in 1935. The son of a clergyman, he
was a talented sportsman and may well have been
picked to play cricket for England had he not chosen
to play in India in 1926. He returned nine years later
with seven students and started teaching in the house
study. We have retained many of the original features
including the study, but the building now has several
dorm rooms sleeping approximately 30 boys.
I am a mathematics teacher and am part of the
Outdoor Adventure team at Millfield. I joined the
school in 2015 and in addition to extensive pastoral
and boarding experience, I have also worked as an
academic Head of Department. My partner Deborah
is also a maths teacher and our family comprises our
children Isaac and Maisie, the family dog Elsie and our
reclusive cat Albert.
Millfield House has remained at the heart of the
school for over 80 years and Meyer’s legacy continues
today. We have a belief that children will all excel
at something and our job is to find and nurture the
talent of all our students. Millfield follows Meyer’s
idea of offering an unparalleled range of opportunities;
coupled with outstanding facilities to encourage
students to discover their abilities whether these are
sporting, academic, artistic or musical. Self-esteem
and success at school are closely linked and we will
look to build confidence in our students and praise
them for their achievements. Often, the development
of a talent leads to success in less favoured aspects of
school.
Millfield House is one of the two boys’ boarding
Year 9 houses. Our aim is to support and nurture the
boys through the year developing their confidence,
productivity and resilience. Our primary goal is to
run a happy house where boys show mutual respect,
kindness and empathy towards one another.
