A LEVEL
DRAMA & THEATRE STUDIES
OVERVIEW Drama at A level develops an informed and skilful theatre practice through the key
areas of devising, performing and analysing. It is for those with an interest in the
craft of theatre – as performer, director or designer – and for those looking to
develop the essential skills of creativity, collaboration and communication.
APPROACH The course integrates practical and written work throughout each unit. Key skills
are developed in workshop and rehearsal-style sessions, underpinned by an
analytical understanding of key practitioners, plays and techniques. Students
develop their performance and devising skills and are encouraged to find their own
voice. The course requires all students to collaborate on a devised theatre project
as well as performing or designing an extract from a contemporary play.
COURSE OUTLINE The course is assessed through practical and written work. The devised theatre
portfolio may be written or submitted as a presentation. It is both an academic
and practical subject; if you choose to study drama you are expected to read,
research and write about all aspects of theatre as well as perform, create and
design.
A level Drama comprises the following components:
1. Devising (40%): in this coursework unit you will devise an original piece of
theatre, in close collaboration with the other members of the class. The finished
product will be performed before an audience.
2. Text in Performance (20%): in this component you will perform a monologue or
duologue, as well as acting in an excerpt from a play.
3. Theatre Makers in Practice (40%): in this component you will study two
complete plays, which you will write about in the written exam at the end of the
Upper Sixth. The exam also requires you to write a review of live theatre seen
during the course.
FURTHER INFORMATION Complete commitment is required to study Drama and students are carefully
guided and supported.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS The GCSE requirements are grade 4 (C) in English Language or English Literature
or Drama.
