THE LAKES HOUSE
WELCOME TO
THE LAKES HOUSE
A hugely warm welcome to The Lakes! We hope you will find your time as
a Lakes girl filled with amazing experiences and happy memories that will
endure for a lifetime.
We are a house of around 60 girls from Years 10 to Upper Sixth.
Each year group has a tutor who is an important part of daily life for the
girls: registering attendance, dealing with some of the daily challenges and
looking out for the girls both pastorally and academically.
I joined Millfield in 1999 as a teacher of English and have developed plenty
of experience in looking after the needs of our students, having worked in
both boarding and day houses across all year groups. I am in charge of GCSE
English and run debating and public speaking at school. I have worked in The
Lakes for the past fifteen years and have been Housemistress since 2017.
What makes a Lakes girl?
When we asked our current girls this question, many responses mentioned
our enthusiasm, respect for others and our individual and collective sense of
fun. The overwhelming message, however, was that Lakes girls are always
busy. This is true; many are performing at the highest levels in their extra-
curricular specialisms and we have a wealth of quite incredible talent in a
myriad of areas.
The girls in The Lakes are also high achieving and academically curious
within the classroom. If they are not dashing off to a fixture or a
performance, our girls can often be found catching up with some academic
work. As a result, there are always plenty of successes to celebrate and, of
course, we love to see our girls excelling.
We are fiercely loyal and our house spirit is nowhere more evident than in
annual house matches. From hockey to house singing, Lakes girls give their
all and it is always fantastic to see such brilliant teamwork in action.
One aspect of which we are especially proud is the kindness that typifies
a Lakes girl. We are deeply mindful of looking after one another as well as
being actively helpful towards others. This kindness can be seen from the
outset when senior girls come alongside our new girls to mentor and help.
In summary, a Lakes girl is one whose focus is relentless in pursuing,
achieving and celebrating her personal best; being brilliant in every area of
her life. We hope you will soon feel at home with us in The Lakes.
