ahead of us. However, to capitalize on this bright future, there are some things we need to think about differently.
I will touch on three areas of consideration. First, I will address the critical need to communicate our story as a counter to the Electrification of Everything (EOE) sentiment in today’s society. Second, I will point out how NPGA’s advocacy for the industry has changed in the last couple of years. Third, and most impor- tantly, I will argue that we as marketers must rethink our busi- ness model to position ourselves for the bright future we have in the EOE environment. There is tremendous opportunity coming our way...are we going to step up and take it?
SHARING THE PROPANE STORY
The EOE movement has astounding momentum. While the bat- tlegrounds largely have been confined to the coasts, they are sig- nificantly expanding, and the California approach has migrated to other parts of the country.
Some marketers think, “Boy, am I glad we don’t have to deal with these issues!” I tell marketers in certain regions that they are blessed indeed that they do not have to navigate these issues like we do in the Western states...however, we are all affected by the
actions of federal agencies and the Biden Administration is on a roll with a firm anti-gas bias.
None of us should underestimate the power of the state popula- tion centers to quickly put us on the defensive. Tom Clark, the Rocky Mountain association director, has first-hand experience of this phenomenon. He is now seeing EOE actions in some of the Rocky Mountain states, which was absolutely unimaginable just a few years ago. Tom reports, “the population shift we have seen in the Rockies is a result of people from the coasts arriv- ing.” As I have traveled across the country, it is encouraging to see a firm commitment to being proactive and telling our story, even in states that aren’t experiencing migration and aren’t deal- ing with a strong local EOE mindset. Many of you have engaged in the PERC partnership program with messaging campaigns which are critically important components for our industry to facilitate a more balanced conversation around EOE. Thank you for your engagement in this effort. The EOE mindset we are dealing with is a myopic view of societal decarb, where electrici- ty is the answer to everything.
I refer to this myopic mindset as the parallel universe where the laws of basic math, physics and economics are ignored and
