Featured Commentary (October): Believe the Totality of the Evidence
The process of investigation is vital to the rights of the individuals - both defendants
and victims; in civil and criminal cases - and our justice system. In the investigations of
death, it can have additional impacts – from civil and criminal, to insurance benefits
                                       and closure to families.

The evidence is not wrong. The interpretation, application of circumstances, and
looking at evidence only individually instead of the totality of the evidence and
                                       circumstances can be wrong.

Every now and then we catch something like 20/20 or Dateline and might
see interesting cases. This is one – for several reasons. A good case, also
with some highs and lows for our profession and judicial processes.

We recently received this unsolicited comment to a student of our basic death investigation course:
"I believe your courses would be good for all law enforcement investigators also, and intend on recommending it to my
investigative unit. Sometimes 'Cops' think that because of their exposure to these types of cases that they assume they
know the answers. I was able to learn several things in your Equivocal Death and Serious Bodily Injury Course that I took
for granted, and just had forgotten. The refresher is always good. I have already made arrangements with our Morgue to
give training on their protocols to assist the relationship between us. Also revamped our SBI/Death Investigation
protocols that had some 'outdated' material." - Major, Homicide, County Sheriff's Office
