Rewriting an existing book (Practical Methods for Legal Investigations – 2010) is
actually more challenging than the original. There are updates, new chapters, and
more to consider. Then there is the multiple editing and proofing. This rewrite
project began in April, and was interrupted in July and August due to Dean’s
medical event and recovery, when it was nearly completed. We were able to return
to final editing and graphics, then final self-publication in early August, and
completed late August.
This is an expanded comprehensive guide of the authors’ Investigative
Protocol for professional legal investigators. This book and reference guide
offers a detailed exploration of the methodologies and protocols essential for
conducting thorough investigations across various types of litigation,
including civil, criminal, and probate cases.
Each chapter is updated and expanded, with new chapters, delving into the
intricacies of legal investigations, highlighting the importance of meticulous
planning, accurate evidence gathering, and proper documentation. It
emphasizes how crucial a systematic approach is when handling different
aspects of legal investigations. The text underscores the significance of
adhering to legal standards and ethical practices, ensuring investigations are conducted within the bounds of law
while maintaining the integrity of the evidence.
One of the key strengths is its practical focus, providing readers with real-world examples, case studies, and
color images which illustrate the application of investigative techniques in various scenarios. The authors stress
the need for investigators to remain objective, avoiding biases which could compromise the investigation's
outcome. Detailed guidelines are provided on interviewing witnesses, reviewing and analyzing evidence, and
working effectively with legal teams.
In addition to the core investigative techniques, this book and reference guide covers specialized areas such as
forensic review and analysis, background and due diligence investigations, and the use of technology in modern
legal investigations. The content also addresses the challenges legal investigators may face, including working
through difficult interviews or managing sensitive information.
This revised edition incorporates the latest developments in the field, offering updated protocols and
methodologies reflecting current best practices. It also considers the impact of evolving technologies on legal
investigations, providing insights into new tools and techniques to enhance the investigative process.
Overall, this book and reference guide serves as a vital resource for professional legal investigators, offering a
thorough grounding in the Investigative Protocol recommended for successful legal investigations in civil,
criminal, and probate litigation cases.
