P. 3
Yes. Since the student is an official employee of the Employer during the internship period, the student
shall be covered under the employment insurance and other statutory requirements and benefits offered
by the Employer based on employment laws in Hong Kong (or the country in which the Employer is
located).
8. How should we handle the students’ Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF)? Do we need to handle
them separately?
Employers are responsible for statutory provisions pertaining to the employment of the student intern.
As regards the intern’s individual contribution, it can be deducted from the intern’s monthly salary.
*Please mark this clearly in the pay stubs.
9. What if the student who signed the contract renege on the offer? Can I transfer the subsidy to
another student for the same job or another job in the company?
No. The funds earmarked are only for the selected student who has been confirmed eligibility by HKUST
Career Center. The Employer can select another student for the job and check the student’s eligibility
again with HKUST Career Center. However, whether or not there will be subsidy allocated again would
depend on whether there are available funds at that time. It is NOT guaranteed that the same amount
of subsidy can be allocated again.
(IV) Payment Disbursement
1. Can we pay the intern with our personal bank account / Company cheque?
You can just pay the student intern through whatever means, including personal / company cheque.
However, please remember to keep all the payment records (e.g. copies of the cheque signed by the
student intern indicating payment details) and submit them in the internship report. Please note that he
reimbursement will NOT be made to any personal account. Please get your company bank account
ready by the time you submit your reimbursement claim.
(V) Subsidy Reimbursement
1. Will the monthly subsidy of $10,500 be reimbursed to the company or the student?
Reimbursement will be made to the Employer. Employer should pay the intern upfront on a monthly
basis and claim reimbursement in one go by 10 September 2020 (for summer internships) / 4 February
2021 (for winter internships).
