The American Legation
        building in the medina of
        Tangier occupies an 18th
        century mansion that was
        the first American public
        property outside the United
States and served as a U.S.
        diplomatic residence for 140
years. It is the only National
        Historic Landmark located
abroad and is still owned by
        the United States. On
        display is a letter from
        George Washington
        thanking the sultan for
        Morocco’s friendship, one of
        the first countries to
        recognize the United States
        as an independent nation.
During World War II it was a
        headquarters for American
        spies.

Tetuan has the charm of all small northern Moroccan towns. Set
among the giant mountains of the Rif, the town has a unique
history. It was a safe haven for many muslim and jewish
refugees fleeing from Christian Andalusia and was later
occupied by the Spanish for almost two centuries. The
multicultural melting pot is reflected in its architecture which is
a wonderful mixture of Spanish and Moorish styles.
