                 Allergen                A substance that can cause an allergic reaction

                 Bain-marie              A receptacle containing hot or boiling water into which other containers are
                                         placed to hold the food warm in them
                 Best before date        Best before dates are about quality, not safety.  When the date is passed,
                                         food might begin to lose its flavour and texture, it doesn’t mean that food
                                         will be harmful.
                 Biological hazards      Microorganisms that have the capacity to cause harmful effects in humans

                 Bugs                    An informal term for microbes or microorganisms
                 Canning                 A method of preserving where food is heated to very high temperatures and
                                         then is placed into sterile cans
                 Chemical hazards        Metals, man-made and natural chemicals that can contaminate or spoil food
                 Cleaning                A procedure to remove dirt and grease

                 Cold                    A common infection in which the mucus membrane of the nose and throat
                                         becomes inflamed, typically causing a runny nose, sneezing and a sore throat
                 Contaminate             To make something less pure or make it poisonous

                 Control                 A means of limiting or regulation something
                 Cross-contamination     The process by which bacteria or other microorganisms are unintentionally
                                         transferred from one substance or object to another, with harmful effect
                 Diarrhoea               A condition in which faeces are discharged from the bowels frequently and in
                                         liquid form
                 Drying                  A method of preservation that removes the moisture from food

                 Eliminate               To completely remove or get rid of
                 Establishment           A business organisation, firm, company, operation

                 Faeces                  Poo
                 Flu                     A highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever,
                                         severe aching and build-up of mucus in the nose or throat
                 Food Control Plan       A plan designed for a particular food business to identify, control, manage,
                                         and eliminate or minimise hazards or other relevant factors for the purpose
                                         of achieving safe and suitable food.
                 Food preservation       A method by which food is kept from spoilage.
