Layers of Fear, Levels of Love 77 This is what I believe happened in the case of the psychiatrist who was interviewed in Chapter 6, who in the course of his analysis had a profound spiritual experience of the selfless and unconditional love of Christ. To me this meant that he had become so open in the course of his therapy that he was able to identify a Christ-like love within himself, which he recognized had been the motivation for
Christ’s great sacrifice.
I believe that this is the innermost reality, which we are all
yearning to rediscover. But to do so we must risk looking more deeply into our life and facing the mortal fear of the possibility of mind-ego death. We must be willing to walk through the valley of death as A.T. was doing here. As terrifying as it seems, we must be able to tolerate this dark vision if some day we are able to see it for what it really is: a grand delusion.
