if you are already in a leadership position, mentor young women. I cannot express enough how much a difference that made for me. If I had not had two strong women who helped me grow, I may have given up. Guide and encourage these young women and when they surpass you, applaud them. These women could, one day, be our daughters, nieces, and granddaughters. We must continue to pave the way for them.
Lastly, men can be our allies. My business partner and fourth generation male owner of our business is one of the best men I know. He does not see gender, only what you bring to the table. What makes us an incredible team is that my strengths compliment his weaknesses and vice versa. He steps down when he knows my area of skill and expertise will excel and I do the same for him. This dynamic has allowed us to see exponential growth in a short few years. So, when possible, build a relationship with your male counterpart. Many
men know the value of women, but can be blind to the obstacles we have to overcome. When you delicately point out this ignorance, they become more sensitive to it. You may see assistance with anything from stopping interruptions at meetings to advocating for pay equality and promotions. Men can be a great help in breaking down inequalities if we take the time to build that rapport.
A culture shift is happening and will continue to progress, but we have to let our voices be heard. If we continue to allow gender-based opinions of others to define us without verbal resistance, we will continue to lag behind. We can make bigger strides by playing our strengths, finding other women to help us build upon our weaknesses, and allying with those, male or female, working to improve upon inequalities. In my next 20 years, I will continue to do my part in making a difference for the next generation of women, particularly my little boss baby girl, Madison.
