  There is a lot of talk about inclusion and equality, and I often think to myself, is that really the conversation that we should be having? The reality is that we are all individuals, and there is no such thing as equality when it comes to people. We are unique individuals, and in many cases our unique abilities set us apart from one another. I know that the discussion about inclusion and equality is meant to provide the same opportunity to every person regardless of their sex, race, religion or sexual orientation, and I am all for everyone having the same opportunity, but the reality is, we also have a part in creating our own opportunities and that individuality separates all of us. I am confident that the opportunities that I have been fortunate enough to experience were not limited or achieved based on my anatomy, but rather my skills, attitude, personality, and talents.
It is no secret that white males are more likely to be the CEO of a company and out-earn their counterparts who are female or of a different race. I appreciate that the conversation has been started drawing attention to this skewed advantage that white males have been given, earned, or some combination of the two, but I have no interest in perpetuating the issue by expecting my sex or anatomy to be a factor in earning me any opportunities that are not based on my talents, grit or drive. While I do not want my sex, heritage, or religion to prevent me from earning opportunities, I also do not want these to be a factor in earning opportunities. I want my knowledge, confidence, and my skills to determine if I get a shot at something. I think if we are all being honest, that’s what we all want.
I grew up in the military way of life which means I was always the new kid—always. When I graduated from high school, I chose to go to school where I knew no one and
