Throughout my journey from receptionist to owner, I have had a wide range of experiences that now, looking back upon, are fortifying.
And to top it off, the indecent proposals. Yes, they have happened. I will spare you the details.
While the experiences I shared are true and likely different than most of my male colleagues, my overwhelming experience has been one in which I have been encouraged and invited and elevated. What we choose to give our energy and focus to is what we will see. If you are looking to be offended or anticipating finding gender bias, you will find it. If I am in a situation where I know I am facing gender bias, I make the choice to not give any energy to it and remove myself. I know that bias reflects the other person, and I have the choice to not give that my energy or emotions! Sure, there is a remnant there that is fading, but the vast majority is looking to highlight, promote, and uplift you. Set your focus there. We can’t drive forward while looking in a rear-view mirror.
My mom and I recently had an intriguing conversation, discussing a pattern of behavior where those who once were oppressed themselves can also turn into oppressors. As
the systems of oppression dissolve and the pendulum starts to swing in the other direction, instead of dismantling the oppressive systems that oppressed them, some can be tempted to adopt the very methods that were used against them. This pattern is not the solution. I have personally been surrounded by strong men who have encouraged, promoted, and supported me including my dad, my husband, my brother, my son, and many friends, including colleagues. I want no part of pushing others down to elevate myself or to participate in the men versus women game. I want the pendulum to fall in the middle, if that makes sense?
I think there is great power in the diversity of thought between men and women. In fact, diversity of thought, I believe, is the greatest connector. With the insurance space being predominantly male in the past, I believe that women bring a refreshing new slant that can have great impact in our industry. The power lies in the balance between the masculine and feminine. It is for this reason that I typically gravitate to industry groups that include both
