Get a mentor
Mentorship has been and continues to be one of the biggest impacts on me personally and in my career. Having someone who has already successfully been in your shoes and can lend guidance and support is one of the most meaningful things that can happen to you. As important as it is to get a mentor, it’s more important to be a good mentee. If you are going to have someone invest their time and effort in you, the relationship only works if you listen and implement their advice.
Get uncomfortable
The only time we experience meaningful growth is when we are uncomfortable. Comfort kills ambition. To effect more change and make a bigger impact as women, we need to step out of our comfort zones, and do things that push our sometimes-self-imposed limits.
Take opportunities
Saying yes to an opportunity leads to more doors being opened. Personally, I feel an immense amount of responsibility to say yes when presented with one. While I gain experience by accepting them, it is bigger than that. It is also a way to show gratitude to those who have fought hard for women to have the same opportunities as their peers, and to make more room for other women in the future. This is the main way we can take action as women to effect major change. We cannot sit on the sidelines and not take the opportunity when it is presented. Be the change you want to see.
Making an impact in our industry is not impossible, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Regardless of your position in the industry, offer your support to women who are seeking opportunities for growth. If you are a woman in this industry, I urge you to: Think bigger. Get more education. Don’t limit yourself. Get uncomfortable. Ask for help. Say yes.
Making an impact in our industry is not impossible, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
