Greetings:
It is my pleasure to acknowledge this book entitled, “Bands on “The Hill,” A
Pictorial History on Bands at Florida A&M University.” The rich legacy of the
Florida A&M University (FAMU) Band program is something that has made a
tremendous impact on my life.
My father, Dr. William P. Foster, who I affectionately called “Doc,” was a drum
major for higher education as the great equalizer. He was the mastermind and
creator of the world-renowned FAMU Marching “100” Band and chairman of the
department of music and director of bands at FAMU. His creative genius is
displayed throughout this book, and I am pleased to reflect on his life and legacy,
and the history of the band program. This book is a remarkable tribute to a man of
humility, and the man behind the baton.
As you enjoy reading highlights from this book, please consider supporting the Dr.
William P. and Mary Ann Foster Foundation. The Dr. William P. and Mary Ann
Foster Foundation is a non-profit organization and is a conduit for all of us to reach
out our hands to the truly needy FAMUans who participate in the FAMU Marching
“100” Band and others. Dr. Foster's books, “The Man Behind the Baton” and
“Band Pageantry: A Guide for the Marching Band” are available for purchase
through this Foundation.
Please enjoy reading the highlights of the FAMU Band program in “Bands on “The
Hill,” A Pictorial History on Bands at Florida A&M University.”
Sincerely,
Anthony F. Foster
